Historic Grade 8 Graduation

Jennifer Engleman
On the evening of June 30, families of Grade 8 students came back to celebrate their graduation. The Class of 2020 sat 6 feet apart in the parking lot of Coast Hills Church with a large stage in front of them. Two large movie screens were added to both sides of the stage. Families stayed in their parking spaces in cars or chairs and watched the ceremony “drive-in movie” style. It was wonderful to be together one final time before students launch into high school. The St. Mary’s Class of 2020 will always hold a special place in the history of St. Mary’s.

Other traditions continued with the girls wearing beautiful white dresses. The boys wear navy blazers with their ties and khaki pants. This year our Valedictorian was also the IB Scholar. He gave an address to the audience and was presented by Ms. Kari Greenfield. Mr. Marco Camargo introduced the ASB President for her address. A beautiful violin solo of “Courante” was performed by one graduate. Mrs. Sharon Taylor, Head of School, gave an address to the graduates. Next, our Legacy Award recipient told the story of how she found out she was the winner by publicly reading the announcement in the yearbook and then gave her words of advice. Finally, the Salutatorian introduced by Mr. Dan Kearney addressed the audience. The Academic Procession began in alphabetical order one student at a time. Students went on the stage and received their diplomas and a took photo before returning to their seats.

Families watched the traditional video of their student’s journey to graduation at the end of the ceremony. A video of the entire graduation event is being finalized and will be shared with everyone soon. Students wrote a letter of appreciation to their parents which they handed to them as they left the ceremony.

Traditional arches with a wide range of flowers and colors were created to take individual graduate photos. The photos will be available later this summer. The group photo was not able to be taken but each graduate’s individual photo will be on a composite group photo.

Our new alumni are always welcome to return to visit. You will always be a Falcon!
