Monochromatic Self Portraits

Maria Diaz
In Studio Arts Year 2, Grade 8 students created Monochromatic Self Portraits where they inquired about the different ways in which we can express who we are through art while discovering our own artistic voices.

Based on a photograph of themselves, students engaged in the study of color by creating a gradient map on Adobe Photoshop and translating it into a piece of mixed media paper by using principles of proportion and composition.

Students identified important areas of color and created a monochromatic chart with two complementary colors which help them visualize exact transitions between the tints and shades in their piece. Students also expressed their creativity by creating their own visual language using non-objective backgrounds based on different color schemes.
