On Saturday, May 12, twelve students from St. Mary’s competed at the Orange County Math Field Day Competition. Math Field Day is an opportunity for Orange County Elementary Schools to join together in promoting excellence in mathematics, teamwork, achieving goals and school spirit. Math Field Day is an all-day math competition for students in Grades 4, 5 and 6 sponsored by the Orange County Math Council (OCMC).
This year the competition consisted of 36 schools, public and private, from all over Orange County, with approximately 400 students. The teams began training in January. The competition includes 5 different areas: Measurement, Geometry, Algebraic Thinking, Number Sense & Operations and Data Analysis. They also competed in the Rubik's Cube Competition.
Olympic-style medals are awarded to the top 6 teams for each grade level in each category. All kids get "goodie bags" of prizes from community donations.
Congratulations to our winning teams in Grades 4 and 5. The Grade 4 team received 1st place in Measurement. The Grade 5 team received 4th place in Number Sense & Operations and 5th place in Geometry.
