Student Life Enrichment
Understanding who you are and having the self-confidence to adhere to those decisions isn’t something we take for granted at St. Mary’s School. We guide each student to develop their personal belief system and to be comfortable expressing their opinions. It’s all part of understanding that we’re an essential part of how the world improves. Here, students make practical, thoughtful connections between their studies and the world. These lessons are interwoven into the curriculum from an early age. Our Student Life Enrichment teaches collaboration, conflict resolution and confidence. Counselor-led mindfulness instruction leads Lower School classes towards emotional literacy and empathy.
The parents, students and teachers will share in the responsibility to learn and practice the IB Attitudes and Learner Profile to develop positive character. Students are provided with the knowledge, skills and tools needed to be successful with the use of the Responsive Classroom’s approach to building a positive community through the following learning opportunities:

- collaborate with others, build new relationships and strengthen existing relationships
- develop authentic self-worth and confidence, understanding how they individually contribute to their surrounding environment
- successfully address conflicts, understand the consequences of their choices and create positive solutions
- appreciate others’ ideas, feelings and convictions while recognizing different opinions and perspectives
- identify and acknowledge their own emotions, thoughts and actions
The social, emotional and spiritual development of our students occurs in daily classroom instruction, throughout K-5 Chapel, Community and social skills instruction. In these formats, students will experience learning from individual opportunities to school-wide venues.

Community
Community Enrichment is a program that strives to provide lower school students with opportunities to not only learn about but also practice IB Learner Profiles. Themes such as Caring, Communicating, Risk-Taking, Open-mindedness, Principled, and Reflective to name a few get reinforced through reading of children’s story books with similar themes, followed by Hopes and Dreams discussions, and setting goals for the year.
Community is also structured to address additional themes of Service, Spirit and Buddy times. Through Service themed communities, students will apply the lessons learned and the goals they set in service activities that support the school, community, and world at large. Through Spirit themed communities, students learn more about St. Mary’s school culture and history in order to build more FALCON PRIDE. Through Buddy themed communities, lower school students get paired up with their buddies in another lower school grade to model and exercise their World-sized hearts through activities to getting to know one another and make connections with another grade.
The Community program is woven by Pastor Mark and Dr. Anderson’s Christian and Character Enrichment Programs, with the specific focus of building World-Sized Hearts and building World-Class Minds. This program develops, promotes, and supports programs, academics, events, faculty, and staff that further our school’s mission of World-sized hearts. World-class minds. -
Mindfulness and Social Skills Instruction
The school counselor facilitates mindfulness and social skills lessons in each lower school classroom. During these classes, students learn emotional literacy which includes empathy, self-awareness, self-regulation, and how behavior may be perceived by others. The school counselor integrates the themes from community into lessons in order to provide continuity with chapel, community, and classroom instruction. -
Classroom Discussions
Guided questions to develop the social, emotional, and spiritual growth of students will be woven into morning meetings and integrated into the curriculum. Parents are encouraged to visit the “Cast of Character Corner” section in the weekly classroom newsletter to continue and reinforce discussions from the classroom.
