Eighth Grade
Eighth Grade is an exciting year as students individually plan a vision for their educational and professional future by researching careers and professions which reflect their demonstrated leadership skills and personal interests. Through exploring universities and majors, Eighth Grade students are able to identify areas of study that can fulfill their leadership vision. The selection of a high school is an integral part of the Eighth Grade experience and is supported by a “Prep School/High School Informational Night” where students and parents can explore numerous options by speaking with admission officers of participating prep schools and high schools at this St. Mary's hosted event.
The Legacy Leadership Program is available to give Eighth Grade students an opportunity to demonstrate exemplary leadership and be honored for their participation in service learning through community service. Students are invited to submit a resume and application for consideration whereby a panel of independent judges from outside of the St. Mary's community evaluates each student on their history of community and school involvement, three essays written in a controlled testing environment, and a 10-minute oral interview. The winner of the Legacy Leadership Award is presented at a Tribute to Leadership school-wide awards assembly and receives a scholarship savings bond worth $2,500 for future educational costs.
Additional highlights include participation in Model United Nations (MUN), a simulation of the United Nations General Assembly. Students step into their role as diplomats from countries all over the world to debate current global issues. Students research economic, religious and educational issues of their assigned country, develop position papers and debate resolutions or hear court cases. Students have an opportunity to develop their voice concerning today's most important issues, present their opinion, and help teammates and others find their political voice.
