Kids Run the OC Marathon
At the heart of St. Mary's IB approach to learning is the concept of service with the dual aim of understanding through action, enabling students to put into practice what they learn in class; and, serving others in order to learn to become responsible, active, compassionate citizens of the world. It is a collaborative approach to learning that requires critical thinking skills and international-mindedness. We believe in the importance of physical fitness programs and nurturing a healthy lifestyle at an early age.
St. Mary's sponsors the Kids Run the OC Marathon “Finish Line Festival” and implements the 10-week training program to support the Kids Run mission to combat the onset of childhood obesity. This on-campus training program helps students develop active and healthy lifestyles, promote good nutrition, and increase physical activity while having fun.
By the end of the 10-week program, each student will have accumulated the equivalent of 25.2 miles through various games and activities. They finish their "marathon" by participating in The OC Marathon Kids Run the OC 1-mile run on Saturday, May 5, 2012.
"As a runner myself, I know that St. Mary's stands firmly behind the mission of the Kids Run to help students lead healthier, more active lives. This philosophy supports our IB framework of learning through a comprehensive mental and physical approach. St. Mary's rigorous IB academic program, complemented with physical and emotional balance, allows our students to achieve personal well-being for themselves and others, and helps them develop into future global citizens and leaders of the world." --John O'Brien, St. Mary's Headmaster
