Speaker Series
St. Mary's School is proud to present the 2012 Speakers Series. As an IB World School, the school fosters the love of learning in children through an inquiry-based approach, encouraging creative thought set within a global framework. In partnership with a strong family foundation, our curriculum works to prepare tomorrow's global leaders for an increasingly diverse and technological future.
The 2012 Speakers Series is free and open to the public. Attendees will have an opportunity to interact with each speaker, as each event will conclude with a question and answer session. Each event will be held at the St. Mary's gymnasium. Please register below.

Strategies for Taming Temper Tantrums

Derek Carroll completed his undergraduate degree in Psychology and English at Dublin City University in Dublin, Ireland and has a graduate degree from Chapman University with a Masters in Psychology, with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT). He is a Child Behavior Specialist and has a number of strategies for early childhood behavior development and eradicating tantrums. Derek will be discussing how best to promote more healthy self-control and communication in our children.

Blessings of a Skinned Knee

Dr. Wendy Mogel is an internationally acclaimed clinical psychologist, parenting expert and the author of the New York Times bestselling parenting book, The Blessing of a Skinned Knee. Her new book, The Blessing of a B Minus, is about raising teenagers. A popular keynote speaker, she lectures widely at conferences and schools. Dr. Mogel will be providing psychological insights, into key parenting issues to include teaching respect for adults, coping with frustration, avoiding over-scheduling and overindulgence, and helping children develop independence and self-control.

Patrick Bassett is the President of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), a membership organization for more than 1,400 independent (private) schools and associations of schools in the U.S. and 250 affiliated schools and associations internationally. NAIS is a leader in educational leadership, research and trend analysis for independent K-12 college-prep education. Mr. Bassett will be providing a framework on "Schools of the Future" and the critical skills and values schools must develop in students to prepare them for the 21st century.
