  • School Accreditation

    02/10/2012 - 4:32pm

One of the obligations of school heads at CAIS (California Association of Independent Schools) schools is to serve on or chair a visiting accreditation team during its visit to a fellow CAIS school that is up for reaccreditation.  This visiting team, made up five to nine teachers and administrators from independent schools across the state, spends a total of three and a half days on the school's campus.  During the visit the team examines all aspects of the school's operations, from programs to facilities to finances and more.  At the conclusion of the visit the team submits a comprehensive report which contains both commendations and recommendations for the school to consider.  This report is also submitted to CAIS, along with a recommendation from the visiting team on the future terms of the school's accreditation.

This past week I was part of a visiting team at The Nueva School in Hillsborough, CA.  Nueva is a dynamic JK-Grade 8 school whose curriculum shares many similarities with St. Mary's in that they too stress creativity, innovation, collaboration and integration of curriculum.  Although Nueva is not an IB school, they have a strong global focus and place significant emphasis on ensuring that everything their students learn has a practical application in the world.  Interestingly, they are well into the plans to expand to a JK-Grade 12 school, and will be welcoming a 9th Grade class in the fall of 2013.  Like us, Nueva's families clearly believe strongly in their school.

St. Mary's will undergo our next accreditation during the 2012-2013 school year.  We are currently drafting a comprehensive self-study that will be submitted to CAIS by December 1st of this year, with the visiting team arriving to campus early in 2013.  We look forward to this process and we expect a similarly positive outcome to the one we experienced during our IB accreditation visits last fall.

  • 21st Century Education

    01/23/2012 - 10:23am

This past weekend I represented St. Mary's at the annual Trustee and School Head Conference sponsored by the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS).  The keynote address was delivered by Salman Khan, the founder and executive director of Khan Academy, a free online learning site that is revolutionizing the field of teaching.   There was also a session on online learning, a phenomenon that is growing in independent schools around the world.  I urge everyone to take a look at the Khan Academy website and to also read the article on 21st Century Education by former Harvard University President Lawrence H. Summers that appeared in yesterday's New York Times.  Schools of the future, as NAIS President Pat Bassett will attest when he visits us on March 28th, will look much different than they do today.

  • A Google Interview

    01/09/2012 - 3:37pm

In the 21st Century job market, prospective employers are increasingly looking for new colleagues who can "think outside the box."  They are seeking creative people who like to solve challenges and who also enjoy collaborating with others.  As a result, today's schools have a pedagogical obligation to foster creativity and the spirit of collaboration in young people.  An IB approach fits perfectly with this notion, which is why those of us who have our children at St. Mary's feel so blessed.

I think you will enjoy reading this recent Wall Street Journal article, "How to Ace a Google Interview."

  • Considering Homework

    12/06/2011 - 11:20am

Homework (how much, how often) is a topic of discussions in schools and at home.  At St. Mary's, we closely monitor the type/s and amounts of homework that we give our students to ensure that assignments are balanced, appropriate and relevant.  In August of 2010 my colleagues and I viewed and discussed the documentary Race to Nowhere, in which homework was a focal point.  Two major outcomes of our discussions were as follows:  continuing to closely monitor homework, and the implementation of periodic homework free nights during the school year, coinciding with St. Mary's community dinner events.  Our students and their parents appreciate both of these policies.  Attached here is a thoughtfully researched and written piece on homework that appeared in a September edition of the Sunday New York Times.  Opinion:  The Trouble With Homework
