6th Grade Field Study: Catalina
Seventy percent of our planet is covered by oceans. The oceans moderate our climate, distribute nutrients and sea life, and shape our land. These are the focal points of St. Mary's Sixth grade field study program to Catalina Island. Students experience the many varieties of sea life found in Southern California. St. Mary's teachers accompany instructors from CIMI (the Catalina Island Marine Institute) at Camp Fox on the eastern side of the island.

In addition to being introduced to the oceanography studiesat Catalina Island, students prepare weeks in advance a comprehensive study of the ocean, climate and historical background of the Channel Islands. Specifically, students read the novel, The Island of the Blue Dolphin to connect to the ways of life of the Chumash Indians.
Sixth grade students travel in small learning groups that participate in activities including kayaking, snorkeling, laboratory studies, touch tanks and aquariums.
In addition students are introduced to the topography of the island and basic astronomy. The featured night snorkel is optional and often a highlight of students.
