Preparing students to be successful in school and to be lifelong learners and global citizens.
St. Mary’s Middle School students pursue a rigorous academic program in a positive, supportive environment. Students are nurtured through the process of growing intellectually while making connections between subject content and the world in which they live. They are trained to think critically and independently, work collaboratively and take a disciplined approach to studying. Through the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), students are taught how to be inquirers capable of accessing and analyzing information and equally capable of developing and presenting informed perspectives.
The Middle Years Programme:
- Ensures breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding through study in nine subject areas: Individuals and Societies, Language Acquisition (Spanish, Mandarin Chinese and French), Language and Literature, Math, Physical Education and Health, Religion/Leadership, Sciences, Technology Design and the Arts;
- Deepens one’s understanding of others and oneself through the Advisory Program and grade-level and international field studies provides opportunities to develop oneself well-roundedly through involvement in the fine arts and athletics;
- Addresses students’ intellectual, social, emotional and physical states of well-being within a community that emphasizes the proper care and treatment of all people and the fostering of healthy relationships; and,
- Enhances students’ understandings of the world, and provides them with the skills and attitudes necessary in order to take responsible action on behalf of others.
Throughout Middle School, students gain an understanding of the IB Learner Profile. These ten attributes inspire the work of students and teachers, providing a statement of the aims and values of IB and a definition of what we mean by “international-mindedness.” IB learners strive to be inquirers, thinkers, communicators, risk-takers, knowledgeable, principled, open-minded, caring, balanced and reflective.
